Sizing a New Swiss Watch

Most ladies' watch bracelets will fit a 7 to 7.5 inch diameter wrist; most men's watch bands will fit an 8 to 8.5 inch diameter wrist. Some dive watches are even more generous, as they are designed for use while wearing a wetsuit.

To make sure you fit within these standards, use a soft tape measure to measure the circumference of your wrist. The tape should be pulled tightly around your wrist. After you have determined your wrist circumference, add 1/4 to 1/2 inch for extra comfort, depending on how lose you like to wear the watch.

Hong Kong Now Top Market for Swiss Watches; US 2nd

Despite the economic crisis and a sharp drop in Q4, 2008 was a banner year for Swiss watch exports. Also of note: for the first time since 1998, the US is not the top market for Swiss watch exports. That title for 2008 belongs to Hong Kong, reports the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry.

Here's the top 10 breakdown by country origin and percentage increase (green) or decrease (red) from previous year:

  1. Hong Kong + $10.9
  2. US -3.0
  3. Japan -4.5
  4. France +15.1
  5. Italy +2.5
  6. Germany +10.2
  7. China +43.1
  8. Singapore +16.8
  9. UAE +27.6
  10. UK -2.7

Swatch Numbers Worst in a Decade

Swatch Group, the maker of popular Swatch watches and luxury brands, such as Omega and Longines, saw net profit decline 17.4 percent, according to various reports in the business press this week. Swatch says the global economic downturn and volatile currencies ate into demand for watches.

MF Global Securities analyst John Guy told Bloomberg that Swiss exports may fall more than 15 percent this year, which may lead to some watchmakers going belly-up and widespread job cuts. If that kind of decline is real, it would be the worst market for Swiss watches since the 1970s "quartz crisis."
