BusinessWeek: Rolex a Top 100 Brand Worldwide

BusinessWeek is out again with its list of the world's top 100 brands and the competition is fiercer than ever:

"Even to qualify for the list, each brand must derive at least a third of its earnings outside its home country, be recognizable beyond its base of customers, and have publicly available marketing and financial data."

Once again, Rolex is the only watchmaker on the list moving up one spot this year to #71 on the list. In explaining its choice of Rolex, BusinessWeek says:

"Business is booming in Asia and the Mideast as the luxury watchmaker enjoys strong demand for its Yacht-Master II and Sea Dweller Deepsea models."

Other luxury brands to make the top 100 include Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Hermès, Prada, and Armani. Of these, only Gucci has a significant watch presence.

Autoblog's Top 10 Car Watches

It probably won't surprise anyone to learn that people who like watches also tend to be car enthusiasts.

With that in mind, the editors of the outstanding Autoblog put together a list of the Top 10 Car Watches.

Some familiar Swiss watch companies, such as Tag Heuer (left) and Rolex are represented, but you'll never guess who landed in the number one spot.

Precious Metal Swiss Watches' Value Far Outpace Sales

Here's an eye-popping stat: according to the October 2008 issue of WatchTime, only 2 percent of Swiss watches are made of precious metals yet they account for a stunning 36 percent of the total value of all Swiss watches sold.

Swiss Watch Growth Means Lots of New Jobs

We've talked a lot on this blog about Swiss watches being in demand and new employment indicators are another sign that the industry is on fire. According to a recently released report by the Employers’ Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry, the watch-related workforce grew 9.9 percent from 2006 to 2007. This continues a strong recent upward trend that began in 2004.

Tourneau's Annual Watch Sample Sale

Tourneau's annual sample sale is set for another round beginning Sunday, Sept. 7th. Tourneau sells pretty much every big name Swiss watchmaker under the sun and all timepieces, with the exception of Rolex and Patek Philippe, are discounted 50 to 70 percent. The sale features both new and pre-owned watch specials. If you are interested and live in the New York City area, here are the coordinates:
